Bolivia: Chilling attack on radio journalist
A radio journalist in southern Bolivia is said to be in critical condition after several masked men broke into his studio and set him alight while he was on the air on Monday.
The attack on Fernando Vidal, 78, who owns and is a presenter for Radio Popular in Yacuiba, near the Argentine border, also injured a studio technician. According to reports, the journalist had recently been criticizing an increase in smuggling in the area and had spoken out against local authorities on the air.
“This chilling attack is one of the worst instances of violence against journalists in Bolivia in recent years,” said Javier Zúñiga, Special Adviser to Amnesty International.
“The Bolivian authorities’ investigation into the incident must be independent and impartial and those responsible must be brought to justice without delay.”
“The recent Plurinational Constitutional Court decision to strike contempt from the country’s Criminal Code is a positive step, but yesterday’s attack show that freedom of expression – including freedom of the press – remains under attack in Bolivia.”

Bolivia: Brutal ataque contra periodista radial
Un periodista de radio en el sur de Bolivia está en estado crítico después de que varios hombres enmascarados irrumpieron en su estudio y le prendieron fuego mientras se transmitía un programa el lunes.
El ataque contra Fernando Vidal, de 78 años, dueño y presentador de Radio Popular en Yacuiba, cerca de la frontera con Argentina, también hirió a una técnica del estudio. Según informes, el periodista había criticado abiertamente la proliferación del contrabando en la región y había criticado a varios dirigentes locales.
“Este brutal ataque es uno de los peores casos de violencia contra periodistas en Bolivia de los últimos años”, dijo Javier Zúñiga, asesor especial de Amnistía Internacional.
“La investigación de las autoridades bolivianas sobre el incidente debe ser independiente e imparcial, y los responsables deben ser llevados ante la justicia sin dilación.”
“La reciente decisión del Tribunal Constitucional Plurinacional de anular el delito de desacato del Código Penal es un paso positivo, pero el ataque de ayer demuestra que la libertad de expresión – incluida la libertad de prensa – está todavía bajo amenazas en Bolivia”.
